Amikin.

 Amikin information

Amikin Indications

Amikin is a pharmaceutical product belonging to the aminoglycoside group. These medicines are commonly employed in the treatment of severe bacterial infections. This type of drugs should not be employed for the treatment of minor infections, in order to lower the chances of the bacteria developing resistances. Also, aminoglycoside treatment may expose the patient to a number of severe side effects.
Amikin is commonly indicated by health care professionals to patients affected by severe bacterial infections. Generally, Amikin is employed in situations where other therapy options have failed to yield any positive results. Amikin may be indicated for infections anywhere in the organism, and may be indicated both in monotherapy as well as combined with other medicines.
This pharmaceutical product may be employed in the treatment of other medical conditions that have not been listed here. For more information on the possible uses of Amikin, it is best to consult a specialized physician or a pharmacist.

Amikin Contraindications

While Amikin is generally safe for use in the majority of cases, there are certain situations when Amikin may not be the best treatment option. For example, in the case of patients that are suffering from kidney disease, the risk of developing side effects is increased due to the larger aminoglycoside blood levels. Also, in such cases the patients may be more prone to developing eighth-cranial-nerve disease (a condition which leads to the loss of balance and / or hearing). Usage of Amikin may not be recommended in the case of patients who are suffering from Parkinson's disease or from myasthenia gravis.
Apart from the above, it is best that the physician carefully considers the benefits of the treatment as well as the risks involved before deciding to prescribe Amikin to pregnant patients, to patients that plan to become pregnant or to breast feeding mothers. The medicine may cause a number of side effects in the unborn baby or nursing infant. Also, Amikin should be employed with caution in the case of children and elderly patients, as they are more sensitive to the effects of Amikin.
Amikin should never be indicated or administered to patients who are allergic to it or to any similar pharmaceutical preparations.

Amikin Intake Guidelines

It is best that you closely follow the prescriber's directions regarding the proper Amikin administration procedure. In case the medicine needs to be administered through injections, make sure that you are properly trained in administering the injections; otherwise, ask a health care professional (a doctor or a nurse) to administer the medicine doses. The injections should be administered every eight or twelve hours over a period of seven to ten days, in the case of children and adult patients. For newborn babies, the indicated dosage may only be administered once every twelve hours and the treatment will last up to ten days. Amikin may also be administered to premature babies; in this case, the doses will be administered once every eighteen to twenty-four hours.

Amikin Dosage

The Amikin dosage that needs to be employed in each case is different; as such, the dosage that has been indicated to you may not be appropriate for the treatment of another patient, and also you may not use the medicine dosage indicated to another patient as the treatment may not yield the desired results. Only employ the medicine dosage that your prescriber has directed. The dosage depends on the patient's body weight, general health condition and a number of other factors.
Your personal health care professional will inform you regarding the correct Amikin dosage that you need to employ, the duration of the therapy and the number of daily doses. If you are unsure that you have correctly understood the dosage information or any of the administration guidelines, you are advised to ask your physician for further details.

Amikin Overdose

An overdose is a severe medical condition, and it needs to be brought to the attention of specialized health care professionals immediately. In the case of Amikin, emergency medical attention may be required. As such, if you suspect anyone of being affected by an overdose with this pharmaceutical product, it is best that you immediately contact the local poisons center or the nearest emergency room. An overdose with Amikin is very likely to cause an exacerbation of the side effects. The consequences of an overdose with Amikin may be severe, possibly even life-threatening.

Amikin Missed Dose

If you have missed one of your Amikin doses, it is best that you take it as soon as you have remembered about it. It is strongly recommended that you avoid such situations. In many cases, setting up a strict medication schedule helps prevent such incidents; it is best that you set up the medication schedule so that it fits your regular life style and daily agenda.

Amikin Side Effects

There are several side effects associated with Amikin usage. Some of the more common are hearing loss, unsteadiness, clumsiness, notable changes in the frequency or quantity of urine, nausea and vomiting, seizures, tinnitus, loss of appetite and increased thirst. Less commonly, allergic reactions to Amikin may occur. It should be noted that this is not a complete list of all the possible side effects. At any point during your treatment, if you experience any unusual symptoms you should check with your health care provider.

Amikin Interactions

Amikin may interact with other aminoglycoside medication, with anti-infectives or with gold salts. Also, Amikin may cause unwanted reactions when administered to patients who also take Capreomycin, Carmustine, Cisplatin, Chloroquine, Cyclosporin, Deferoxamine, Lithium, Plicamycin or Tiopronin. Other medicines may also interact with Amikin. As such, you should inform your prescriber of any other drugs you are currently taking before starting a treatment with Amikin.
